In our daily lives we are surrounded by fabric. Many of these fabrics are mass-produced and bypass the more traditional ways of working with cloth. Old world handicrafts, such as weaving, hand-dyeing and hand embroidery are being lost.
Countries around the world have a rich history of textiles, from the kimonos in Japan to batiks in Bali and mud cloth in Africa. Many fabrics are unique depending on the history, techniques and cultures of a region. Drawing from the textile history and materials of a region, artists have transcended time and place through the creation of a new artwork.
Curated by Chiaki Dosho
About the Curator
Chiaki Dosho is a fiber artist and quilter whose artwork has been exhibited throughout Japan and internationally. After completing her undergraduate degree in Japanese Literature, Dosho studied fashion, followed by quilting. She found quilting to be a very profound and interesting medium. Dosho first made traditional quilts before creating original art quilts two years later. Twelve years after she began quilting, she studied Textiles at Musashino Art University.
Dosho’s artwork is uniquely dimensional and textural; it is an art quilt, but also it is fiber art, thus, she refers to it as “fiber art quilt.” She uses many kinds of materials such as old Japanese kimonos, clothing, fashion, interior fabrics, and Japanese paper. Her techniques include embroidery, dyeing, painting, and discharge.
Curator Statement
I am truly grateful that there were so many entries in response to my call. Every work was filled with the artist's thoughts. I had a hard time choosing the 32 works.
I was struck by the fact that many of the artists have lived in several countries, have a deep understanding of their favorite fabrics and materials, and have been thinking about them. I was also reminded of the wonderfulness of turning them into works.
In addition to the design of the work, I also carefully reviewed how they interpreted the theme and used it in their work. I also realized that many different countries, lands, and environments have a big influence on their works. I also learned that they value materials such as their families and the land they live in.
That was a great experience for me. I am looking forward to seeing more and more of the artists' future works.
