Curated by Katriina Flensburg
Anyone who has ever created an art quilt that meets the criteria defined by SAQA understands the immense effort it requires. It’s not just about working with colors, hues, motifs, print designs, form, and composition. You also have to navigate various surface design techniques, sewing methods, and an overwhelming array of materials with unique characteristics.
These factors add layers of complexity, demanding fearless, open-minded, and carefully considered decisions. Whether crafting a detailed, time-intensive piece or an improvised one with just a few strategic elements, every decision is crucial to the final outcome.
As someone who primarily works with improvisational methods and minimalist design, I find it inspiring to explore work that takes the opposite approach. In my selection of pieces (a task I am both delighted and proud to have been entrusted with), you’ll encounter not just 24 stunning artistic compositions, but also a showcase of skill and thoughtful craftsmanship. The processes behind their creation bear a striking resemblance to the mindful steps required to build any complex structure in real life.
Take a close look—and enjoy!
