Artist Statement
Sue uses fabrics, dyes, and sewing machine to make quilts depicting wild animals. She painstakingly creates realistic feathers and scales, mostly based on her own photographs. She also loves stitching by hand, especially Hawaiian quilts.
Sue’s “Listen for the Music” was juried into the SAQA Exhibition Musica!, and “Tambuzi Takeoff” was juried into Aloft.
Sue’s pieces have been juried into (Canadian) National Juried Shows, where they were awarded “Excellence in Hand Quilting” in 2018 and 2019, and First Place for “Art – Portraits” in 2019. Her quilts have also been in AQS shows, including a third place for hand quilting at Charleston in 2019. She also won a third place for a miniature quilt at the IQA Judged Show in 2019.
Fabrics based on Sue’s penguin quilts have been combined into the Magdalena collection by Northcott fabrics, for sale Nov. 2020.
Sue also had a career as an engineer/project manager focusing on transit infrastructure, retiring in 2017.
