Artist Statement
I have always been fascinated by journeys, both physical and emotional, and how they relate to the places and the times that they occur. My current work takes inspiration from walking the land where I live, and the emotional paths I am treading as I deal with the changes of ageing, as well as my journey through grief.
The words I stitch by hand are my own. Poetic reflections of place, time, and memory, written onto paper and then copied, by eye, using needle and thread. These words are layered onto cloth or vintage linen, often with its own story to tell.
Leaning into a hand made, monochromatic palette of oak gall ink and charcoal paint collected from my surroundings, my words, and the lexicon of stitches I use, allow me to tell the story of my experiences of travel and change, such as in my quilt The Ghost of a Thread. My work then becomes a conversation between the materials and processes I choose to work with, and myself as the maker. Personal reflections, quietly told.
