Artist Statement
Inspired by images of daily life, both past, and present, I work in a style of contemporary realism using only fabric and thread to create portrait and genre compositions.
With a life-long interest in fiber, I began sewing at age 6 and quilting at 16. I earned an M.A. in Education and have been a public school educator for nearly 4 decades, including 9 years spent teaching children of military families serving overseas. While living abroad, I immersed myself in interaction and learning with the people and traditions of many cultures, including studying carpet weaving in Turkey and fabric dying in Japan. Returning to the states in 2001, I began a journey into art quilting. Since then, my award-winning portrait and genre quilts have been exhibited in many national and international juried shows and featured in numerous publications. In my book, Thread-Painted Portraits, I share the extensive knowledge and techniques behind my award-winning portrait quilts.
