In 3D computer graphics, ray tracing is an algorithm that traces the paths of light rays as they interact with virtual objects in a modeled scene. To create the image for my quilt, I modeled a large plane covered by diagonal, parallel stripes with a rectangular slab of glass above it. I deformed the top of the glass slab to form an array of squares. Each square has sharp peaks and depressions defined by triangular facets. Rendering software used trillions of rays to produce the final rendering, which views the glass from above. The diagonal stripes can be seen on the edges of the quilt, beyond the borders of the glass slab.
