As a scientist, I studied cells and tissues of marine organisms with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Part of my work included showing the public how the SEM was used for scientific research. I was always on the lookout for demonstration samples that would
be familiar to people who might not have a scientific background. One day, an unfortunate spider on the wall of my lab became a demonstration sample. This piece is inspired by the stunning pattern of microscopic ridges and hairs seen with the SEM on the back of that spider.
