This work is inspired by photographs taken for the U.S. Farm Security Administration during the 1930’s Dust Bowl Era, and are my tribute to the independent family farm. The family farm is an essential part of our diverse American fabric, representing strength, tenacity, and perseverance. The faces of these two young girls show grit, determination, and hope. Printing on heavy feed sacks was challenging, as was the sewing and piecing. The hand stitching represents the skills they may have been learning at the time, adding their own personal touch to the piece.
Materials
Vintage feed seed sacks, photo emulsion silkscreen materials, textile inks, Peltex, cotton backing, several broken machine needles.
Techniques
Hand screen printed images on vintage sacks, piecing, machine pieced and quilted.
