Textile Talks: Reflections of Ourselves (Tracey Lawko)

Growing a grass-roots collaborative art project

Four years ago, Tracey Lawko decided to create a large textile artwork celebrating Canada’s rich cultural heritage. She sought broad participation from across the country, with diversity represented in techniques, materials, age, economic means, social status, and more. Over 100 Indigenous, settler, and immigrant Canadians created a textile leaf to honor their cultural heritage.

In this Textile Talk, Tracey discussed creating “Reflections of Ourselves” and the new-to-her task of producing a documentary. The documentary showcases the artwork, exhibition, and interviews with artists. A grant from the Ontario Arts Council funded this project.
