Material Conversations. Susan Byrnes, artist

Non-SAQA
Exhibition

Susan Byrnes is a collector of Images. The images flow fluidly through her imagination. Processing these images spontaneously allows the work to be free-flowing, gestural, and intuitive. Drawing with thread and the rotary cutter, Susan explores memories, real and imagined.

This exhibition brings together a variety of methods to explore the conversations created by the assemblage of stitch, drawing, gestural drawing, and piecework. Each work creates a dialogue between its elements by creating new conversations between line, color, and shape. There is a sense of call and response in the creation of the work; a stitch piece is created and then another is requesting to be juxtaposed to it. A color component is made, and it needs to be answered by another color, form, or shape. In this way the whole piece comes together as a conversation fulfilled. By trusting the materials and the creative process, Susan allows each work to reveal itself, creating new imagery to be explored and interpreted by the viewer.
