Fantastic Stories

Non-SAQA
Exhibition

Artist Lena Meszaros writes, "I create figurative art quilts. "Fantastic Stories" reflect my particular vision between reality and fantasy.

In my youth, I worked in the theater as a dramaturge, and I've kept this attraction for staging. Above all, I love telling and sharing human stories. My works are about suspended time, a moment when everything stops, but where we always imagine movement, the before and the after. There's this intensity of the present moment, very delicate, very ephemeral, sometimes dramatic. There's also a kind of exuberance, an almost baroque profusion, a visual charged with color and emotion.

In 'Revenge of the Sewing Machine', a frustrated machine turns into a White Dragon and takes control of creation, starting to embroider its owner. In 'Heritage', the central character is a large Coat, carrying the suitcases of past generations. 'Archaeology' represents layers of different civilizations like a memory fail for whom it's impossible to fill in all the gaps. In 'Crossed Civilizations-Egypt', artificial intelligence transports ancient Egyptian civilization into our era. 'The Holiday Box' describes a disturbing vision of our future, where we'll be reserving boxes with rehydrated seawater for our vacations...  Each creation allows visitors to position themselves and interpret the message according to their own life experience and emotions."
