This exhibit challenged each artist to venture into uncharted territories of creative expression by turning away from the comfort zones of their established body of work. It provided a "permission slip" to experiment fearlessly with radically new conceptual and narrative agendas; to employ techniques, technologies, or materials new to the artist. The artistic goal of the exhibition is to encourage reaching beyond comfort to make new and unexpected works of art.

Artists create their works to help them answer questions. Deux, is a visual conversation that expresses the questions and ideas important to each artist. Two works show side by side, inviting the viewer to find the connections between them, and see how the artists handle the challenges of composition and technique.

Mental illness carries with it a stigma; many of us have experience with disorders, temporary or permanent, curable or not, that in the past and in some cultures even today would be labeled as crazy. That stigma can make it difficult to admit its effect on our loved ones or ourselves. Disorders as common as anxiety or depression, or less common, like schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder, can have a devastating effect on families and friends, and on ourselves. Negativity towards those who have these disorders often causes many people to keep the diagnosis hidden from friends and family. This exhibit focuses on experiences with mental illness from the eyes of the caregiver, the friend, or the family member, and, of course, those who have experienced any of these disorders themselves.

This exhibition displays work that explores the complex theme of memory. The retrieval of the past can involve many layers, including the persistence of recurring memory, the forgotten past, and the nature of recollection. Critic Kate Green suggests that, "memories may be stored in our minds, but they are unleashed by textures, words, and forms." How we store and retrieve memory, whether by using a computer or touching a piece of cloth from our past to spur recollection, memory remains a constant priority in our daily lives for the preservation of our individual and collective histories. This collection presents a universal theme, interpreted in very different ways.

Aging affects everyone in many different ways. Through the use of a wide variety of visual metaphors, these 35 works show the impact of aging on our lives: three generations sharing a cup of tea, a decaying leaf, an empty chair. These poignant images draw you in and challenge assumptions about aging.
Metaphors on Aging was SAQA’s first major exhibition to travel to Africa. It was displayed at 13 venues on three continents and our estimate is that it was viewed by over 100,000 people during its travels.

"Redirecting the Ordinary" is about turning things around, upside down, inside out, backwards, or how even just a minuscule course correction can charge up the humdrum, turn the common into the uncommon, and make the expected unexpected.
We live in an environment we take for granted. We often miss the essential and forget that we can make the routine so much more vibrant and interesting. These selected artists have interpreted the object or phenomenon in cloth to bring attention and significance to the ordinary.

Fourteen artists were invited to create an installation of artworks featuring a sightline linking all the artwork in the exhibit. Each artist chose her own themes and created five to eight artworks, including four 8x8" linking pieces, covering a ten foot wide space. Perhaps the required continuous line provided provocation, both conscious and unconscious, to the artists to focus on time, personal history, and memory.
SAQA thanks the Australian contemporary quiltmaking group, tACTile, who originated the concept of the sightline in their "eyeline" exhibition.
