These scrub oak trees on our land on Grand Mesa in Colorado look as if they are holding hands. A large grove, I have painted them in all seasons and used one of the paintings for this composition. Knowing I wanted to hand quilt the work I decided to use the turning technique for the appliqué. Intervals between the tree trunks intrigued me with the variety of their rhythms. When it was done they looked so cold I decided to warm them up with different shades of white buttons - from white to cream to the golden soft color of old ivory.
