Which Way Up? – is a textile interpretation of traditional Maori (Aotearoa New Zealand) tukutuku panels seen in buildings and artwork. The panels come in many designs and are slats held in place with knots creating a decorative cross pattern.

These two artworks are inspired by the poutama design, a stepped tukutuku panel pattern featuring single or double steps. Poutama can have many meanings, these steps represent the path to gain knowledge - go alone up the single steps or share the journey upwards with others on the mirrored double steps.
