There is a double meaning to this diptych: first, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy is my favorite book of all time. I first read it in my late twenties, and since then I’ve read it at least five times, as well as watching every film and television version several times.

Second, the subject of the book is so very relevant at this moment in our history. Several wars are raging in the world, and peace seems a distant prospect. We need more than ever to stop fighting, to be kind to each other, and to take action to protect our planet in the climate emergency we are in.

Color, line, and shape convey each piece’s meaning. War is dark, conflicted, and messy. Peace is bright, calm, and harmonious.
Materials
Digitally printed cotton sateen, polyester threads.
