View From the Water - Amsterdam

Amsterdam is home to many people who live in apartments, houses or houseboats on the 100 kilometers (60 miles) of canals. The iconic canal houses, many dating back to the 17th century, are very picturesque and painted or photographed regularly.

‘View from the Water - Amsterdam’, part of my Textile Sketchbook series, is a textile translation of a sketch that I did when visiting Amsterdam in 2018. I love sketching on location to capture the essence of a place, time, or experience, and to cement my memories in a way that taking a photograph does not achieve. Creating textile art from my sketches is another way to revisit those memories.
