Coming from a traditional quilting background and being fairly new to the art quilt world, I decided to work outside of my comfort zone. This meant putting away my brightly colored fabrics and creating a smaller art quilt. Being a Southern gal I have always loved magnolias, so this seemed like a logical subject matter. I had also never worked with white so dissecting the magnolia only to find blues, lilac, pink, green, peach, and other colors was such a thrill. Especially so, since I have no art background. I truly felt like a kid in the candy store.
For me art quilts have unlocked the creativity in me that traditional quilting did not. The satisfaction and peace I find in my studio over looking the lake we live on is indescribable and priceless.
