Turbulent waves of purple and red represent The River Styx. In Ancient Greek mythology, the river separated the world of the living from the world of the dead, and the souls of the dead had to cross it to enter into the underworld with Hades. According to Dante, the river could be found in the fifth circle of hell, where vengeful sinners are punished by being drowned in the murky waters for eternity.
