What do you see when you view a full moon? I avidly observe each month’s full moon and have often asked friends if they could see a rabbit there. I discovered a Japanese folklore tale of selflessness that tells this story: One night, the Man of the Moon came to earth disguised as a beggar asking for food. A rabbit, who had only grass to offer, threw himself on the fire to feed the beggar. Touched by this generosity, the Man of the Moon placed the rabbit’s image on the moon for all to see. This tale was the inspiration for my piece. My rabbit is depicted in oriental fabric to honor the origin of this fable.
