While making a wall hung art quilt inspired by textures and barnacles found on the outside of oyster shells, I painted the backing to look like the inside of the shell, even though no one would see it. Then I wondered if making the shells three-dimensional would allow both sides to be seen. That lead to making an entire oyster with both shells. Oysters also often grow in clumps, so I included a second oyster to make this sculpture self-supporting.
Materials
Cotton fabric, acrylic felt, WireForm modeling mesh, Velcro, fabric paint, glue. Kraft-tex paper, paint, colored pencils, and glue for the barnacles.
Techniques
Cotton and felt were machine stitched to WireForm mesh. The outer side was painted after stitching, the inner side was painted before stitching.
