Nothing to Fear is the first in my Mortality series, These gestural skeletal figures conflate opposites: joy and grief, cloth and bones, the fleeting moment and the ultimate end. The benign gesture runs into the primal fear associated with skeletons, and all are covered in an exuberant blooming surface of collaged and quilted cloth. The piece was completed in 2008 and caused a stir at Quilt National in 2009.
Materials
Collaged and quilted cloth over armature of commercial plastic bones.
Techniques
Machine collage and machine quilting, hand-sewn to armature.
