While my family walked down into the Canyon one December, I followed along by reading "The Man Who Walked Through Time" by Colin Fletcher. His descriptions of the geography are embedded in the details of strata and geology seen in this piece. They include the Colorado River, layers of grey granite, purplish-red shale, then the purple layer called the "Great Unconformity", with red sandstone buttes plus vegetation and lighter shell-deposits at the top.
This, my very first original "art quilt", was a response to my wish to have an authentic, but too expensive, Navaho rug. It features characteristic muted colors, as would be true of the natural dyes used in rugs.
