Mind the Gap focuses on the deep spaces between both sides of the train or subway tracks. It's dangerous.and what's really down there? Look beyond to the spaces between the teens, the family, the elders, and a homeless sleeping form; all perhaps waiting for the next train. I loved putting together this composition. I took photos of people in Pasadena, CA and in Monterey, CA. I enjoy working with hard edges, and contrasting colors and textures. The cut out dots from soft plastic remind us of the sturdy bumps we feel as we stand or cross the surfaces at such a juncture.
Materials
Japanese silk, cottons, plastic craft sheets, archival glue, domestic threads, 80/20 batting, acrylic paint and graphite were all used.
Techniques
Machine pieced with free-motion stitching, using a Bernina 440QE. There is some raw edge appliqu, hand-stitching and fusing. The soft dots were cut out of pliable plastic foam sheets and glued down. A paper punch was used for the small ones, and just scissors for the larger ones.
