Maeshowe is a stone chambered cairn built over 5000 years ago on Orkney, Scotland. Originally a burial chamber, it was left undisturbed for over a thousand years, when a band of Norsemen took sanctuary there from a blizzard. The runes they left, inscribed all over the stones inside, tell their story. For several days each year around the midwinter solstice, the sun shines directly down the narrow, sloped and low entrance passageway, into the cairn, which is what I have chosen to depict here.
