This small, whole cloth, mixed-media quilt was inspired by my lifelong love of handstitching and of improvised drawing. The motifs are in part derived from African mudcloth designs and from old Japanese fabric designs, combined with my own sketchbook doodlings.
Materials
Muslin, fabric dye, India ink, opaque acrylic ink, conte crayon, colored pencil, cotton sewing thread, cotton embroidery thread.
Techniques
The design was sketched in India ink. The black blocks were painted in black fabric dye, and when that began to bleed way beyond the boundaries of the blocks, I was forced to let go of my original plan and experiment.
