The gentleman in the picture represents William Morris of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and the artwork in the bottom left is derived from one of Morris's wallpaper designs. The theme is the ever-growing conflict between the purposeful and "slow" work of the hand, and the mass production and industrialization of the 19th and 20th centuries.
