The idea of making something beautiful out of materials otherwise destined for the trash intrigued me. So I collected junk mail and sales flyers, leftover wedding favors and curtain cut-offs. Business reply postcards fluttered of out magazines. It was the plastic bags that made me stop. Dedicated as I am to reducing waste and recycling, I still found a large variety of single-use plastic bags in my home. I only ended up using a small bit of the trash I collected. A gyre is a large system of circulating ocean currents. The pervasive use of plastics across the globe since the 1950's has left us with large deposits that collect in these gyres. All the paint and stitching won't hide the fact that we generate too much trash.
