Before I was introduced to art quilts during my first visit to New York City in early 1990s, I maintained an artist studio in Moscow where I worked on one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces sold exclusively at the Moscow art salons. Many of my garments were embellished with appliqué depicting Russian-inspired motives, such as personages from fairy tales and golden domes of Russian churches. It was only natural that my first quilts were also inspired by Russian Orthodox architecture. "Golden Ring" interprets the Golden Ring of historic cities northeast of Moscow, open-air museums preserving monuments from the twelfth to eighteenth century, with the domes depicted using lace, braid, ribbons - dyed and hand painted, beads, sequins and prairie points.
