Inspired by my daughter, Chloe, and the artist, Chuck Close. Chloe was born deaf, persevered through those challenges, and discovered she had ADHD at college. ADHD is underdiagnosed in girls and many of its symptoms mimic other diagnoses, including deafness, hence it went long undetected. Close, who had dyslexia, was paralyzed, and later developed dementia, painted abstract portraits using small blocks. This quilt portrait is based on my favorite photo I took when Chloe was three.
Materials
Chloe’s childhood dress scraps, recycled men’s shirts, cotton batting.
Techniques
Small blocks are pieced, backed with facing, sewn together on a diagonal grid using paper piecing, then quilted using stitch-in-the-ditch.
