Gather Up the Fragments tells my story and that of unknown quilters from the past; our memories of children, love, and the work we do with our hands. I chose the simplest quilt pattern of all—the one patch. Some squares are missing, perhaps because the women do not remember...or they merely want to keep their secrets. Memories are arranged in colors that mimic the warm glow of a fading sunset. The quilting is my version of the traditional tree of life. The title comes from the bible verse John 6:12, “Gather up the fragments that remain that nothing be lost,” because that is what I hoped to accomplish in this work.
