Escape From The Forbidden Planet

My quilt is based on costumes I designed for the musical Return to The Forbidden Planet. This sci-fi romp is based on the 1950s movie Forbidden Planet, which is based on Shakespeare's The Tempest. As we gathered around our TV sets, we watched with terror as mankind ventured into space to battle the unknown. The robot became a major character, and ours is built out of coke cans and other junk they brought with them. In the fifties, the idea of alien civilizations had us imagining monsters and strange beings from other planets. The 1969 moon landing had us all watching to see if our fears would come true. Who knows as we head toward Mars.
