I had the privilege of learning Alice's story from her son Gilbert. During the Nazi reign, many parents were anxious to provide a safe place for their children—there is a lot of similarity between then and now. On January 5, 1939, Alice began her journey from a small town outside Frankfurt. Her parents made the decision to send her on a Kindertransport to a children’s home in Switzerland. Her father was not allowed to come to the train station to see her off. He hid behind a light pole to wave goodbye. Alice never saw her family again. Many immigrant families must make those same choices today. Marginalized immigrants are still not welcome.
