Weir’s Alcatraz series is based on photos the artist took on a visit to Alcatraz Prison in the San Francisco Bay. What moved her most about the experience was the powerful sensation of degradation. Her artwork in response to this emphasizes the physical disintegration of the environment, and, by extension, of the prisoners themselves. Rust, peeling paint and staining are prevalent.
