The original concept for this piece was that
it be a commemorative quilt. Aizu-Wakamatsu is a town
in the western part of the Japanese prefecture of
Fukushima. Matsunaga is an elementary school in the
town of Aizu-Wakamatsu that I visited while on a
Fulbright Memorial Fellowship. Aizu—Wakamatsu:
Matsunaga is composed of photographs of the city of
Aizu-Wakamatsu along with photographs of students at
Matsunaga elementary school, their bookbags, and a
sample of one of their calligraphy lessons.
