As an English linguistics major and Chomskyan, I spent about 20 years teaching as a university lecturer in Seoul, Korea. When I was younger, I attended Sunhwa Art Middle School, majoring in painting. This early exposure to art sparked my lifelong interest in art history, exhibitions, paintings and artists, and planted the desire to create my own work.
About 20 years ago, quilting became a hobby, inspired by the stunning colors and patterns of Kaffe Fassett and other designers’ fabrics. The beauty of these materials ignited my passion for art. I choose fabric instead of canvas to express my emotions, colors, and forms. My work now focuses on themes of incompleteness, movement, and energy, exploring the sadness and beauty these evoke.
Over a decade ago, I left academia to dedicate myself fully to art quilting. Since 2018, I’ve been a member of the Korean Art Quilt Association, participating annually in exhibitions alongside 30 of Korea’s leading art quilters. This group has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration. Before the pandemic, I regularly attended a monthly art quilt study group for several years, which deepened my knowledge of quilting and textile arts. I also continue to participate in workshops and exhibitions with two other quilt groups in Korea.
Looking ahead, I am eager to connect with the global quilting community through SAQA, to exchange ideas, foster creativity, and grow alongside fellow artists. I hope that my work and involvement with SAQA will inspire others and contribute to the broader art quilt and textile art community. I would like to thank Misik Kim and SAQA for giving me the opportunity to apply for the SAQA Representative position for Korea.
