My first peek into the realm of art quilting was in the 1970’s. I babysat for a family in which the mom was a very talented quilt artist. I will never forget a portrait she made of an old woman, Marnie Woods, that captured every line and shadow on her face simply by using fabric and thread. That piece of art has remained in my mind and heart for over 50 years.
When my youngest child left for college I began my journey into the art world, taking classes, and discovering SAQA. Since then I find inspiration in the beauty that surrounds me every day: in old things and new, in people, nature, and manmade objects. I am especially inspired by my husband’s and my travels to foreign lands.
My love of fabric, color, and texture guides most of my work as I relish getting lost in the creative process of dyeing, painting, printing, cutting, and stitching. Each piece I create is a response to something I have seen or felt. Through my art quilts, I hope to spark an interest in viewers that art is more than traditional paintings and sculptures. I also hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. Perhaps someone will ponder one of my works for many years.
I have been blessed to have been juried into a handful of shows/exhibits. My goals include becoming a more prolific producer of art quilts and entering (and being accepted into) more prestigious shows. I look forward to growing deeper in my own appreciation of the art quilt and learning more about SAQA as a community.
