OFFICE CLOSED
The SAQA Office will be closed from August 5 through August 18. Martha Sielman will be in London (and at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham on August 14th). There will be someone available to receive your auction donations, but there will not be email or telephone communication until she returns.

FINAL CALL FOR DONATIONS! - SAQA AUCTION 2008
We've received 127 pieces so far, and they’re gorgeous! Check out the images already up on the web site: http://www.saqa.com/newsebulletins/Squares08_1.aspx Please support SAQA by making a One-Foot Square for SAQA Auction 2008. The deadline is August 15, 2008. Create a label with your name and the title, include your web site so that we can link to it, and send the finished pieces to: Martha Sielman, 52 Charles Lane, Storrs, CT 06268.
**Please NOTE that we will be displaying a selection of auction quilts at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. If you would like to have your auction piece considered for display, it must have a 3.25 inch hanging sleeve to accommodate the hanging system.
**If you can also send a good quality jpg (no larger than 800 x 800 pixels) with a pure white background, or cropped to the edges of the quilt, to Eileen Doughty (ef.doughty@verizon.net), that will help get your piece up on the web site faster.

Deidre Adams has designed the ads for the auction. They will be running in Quilting Arts, Fiberarts, American Craft, AmericanStyle, Selvedge. 5,000 postcards are being printed to hand out at IQF-Houston and to send to SAQA’s VIP list. It’s important that everyone start putting the word out on any web lists that you belong to, at your guilds, to your friends and family, etc. Last time we raised $28,000 on word-of-mouth advertising alone.

We’ll again be dividing the pieces into three groups for the auction – final groupings will be determined once all the auction pieces have been received. The auction for Group I will begin November 10th at 2:00 Eastern/5:00 Pacific. Group II will begin November 18th. And Group III will begin November 28th.

DONATIONS
Individual donations currently total $22,424! The generosity of SAQA’s members and supporters has already surpassed SAQA’s individual donations goal for 2008. We cannot put on exhibits, print catalogs or do outreach without this support. Membership fees cover only 40% of the operating costs, and this additional support is critical in allowing SAQA to fund our exhibitions, publications and programs.

SAVE THE DATES – Art & Excellence Conference May 21-24, 2009 in Athens, Ohio
Plans for the 2009 Art and Excellence Conference in conjunction with Quilt National ’09 in Athens, OH are firming up. The committee would like to give you a peek at the tentative schedule to entice you to come. Featured keynote speaker after Saturday’s luncheon will be Alyson Stanfield, the ArtBizCoach and author of I’d Rather be in the Studio!

Our conference kick-off event will be an Artist ‘speed-dating’ mixer as a fun way to get to know the other attendees on Thursday evening.

Mini-workshop presentations on Friday will include: Sandra Sider (critiques), Gregory Case (digital photography basics), Carol Taylor (Pricing, Sales & Commissions), Pat Gould (digital entry preparation), Gwyned Trefethen (Time Management), Deb Cashatt and Kris Sazaki (digital designing with layers), and Lisa Chipetine and Michele Hardman (moderating a Marketing Outside the Box brainstorming session).

Several panel discussions, mentorship round tables, a trunk show and a Saturday evening barbeque have been added to the mix. And the Quilt National ’09 Opening, the Quilt National Banquet, the auction of Art Gallery in a Box IV, and the FOFA Sunday brunch are returning favorites.

Following up on the success of pre-conference workshops offered this year in Wayne, PA, we are offering six wonderful pre-conference 3-day workshops Monday through Wednesday (May 18 -20), 2009.

1. Silk/Textile Painting by Smadar Knobler
2. Shibori by Christine Zoller

IQF-LONG BEACH WAS A BIG SUCCESS!
Two of Ree Nancarrow’s pieces sold out of the “A Sense of Place” exhibit. SAQA sold 82 copies of the catalog, 101 copies of “Masters: Art Quilts” (55% of the sale price is donated to SAQA), and recruited 26 new members.

All of the SAQA lectures and gallery walks were heavily attended and very successful. Thanks to all the lecturers: Rose Hughes (who did the Gallery Walk twice!), Jake Finch, Marjorie Johnson, Connie Rohman, Cindy Rinne, Mary Tabar and Terry Waldron.

Major thanks to Jamie Fingal and Connie Rohman for coordinating SAQA’s booth. And a special thank you to all the SAQA members who volunteered their time in the booth: Liz Berg, Peggy Calvert, Marion Coleman, Cindy Cooksey, Anne Copeland, Carol Gentile, Cathy Gregory (more than one shift!), Sandi Hankins, Marka Harwell-Bentley, Trudi Chamoff Hauptman, Rose Hughes (more than one shift!), Rene Jennings, Jeanette Kelly (more than one shift!), Pam Klebaum, Sherry Kleinman, Franki Kohler, Carol Larson (more than one shift!), Jayne Larson, Mavis Leahy, Karin Lusnak, Felisa Lyons, Karen Markley, Sherry McBride, Linda Miller, Ania Mulka, Yvonne Porcella, Cindy Rinne (more than one shift!), Karen Rips (more than one shift!), Pat Rollie, Carolyn Ryan, Julie Schlueter, Carol Suto, Del Thomas, Sandy Wagner, Terry Waldron, Lynne Welter and Susan Willen.

Beginning January 1, 2009 a three-person committee will review new PAM applications on a quarterly basis. The review committee will consist of three PAM’s who are not board members. We are looking for volunteers (please email me if you’re interested msielman@sbcglobal.net). Each review committee group will serve for one year. Decisions will be based on the criteria listed on the web site under Guidelines for Becoming a PAM: http://www.saqa.com/members/PAM_Guidelines.aspx

NEW SERVICES FOR MEMBERS
1. Second region option: You can now select a second state or country to "belong" to as part of your member profile. For instance, if you are stationed in a different country for a time, you can select to be a part of the country you are from. Or if you live in Indiana close to Chicago, you can select Illinois and be a part of that region. Or if you live in DC and want to know what's happening in Virginia & the Carolinas, you can select Virginia and be notified of any events happening there.

Go to the Members tab and select Members Home here:
http://www.saqa.com/login.aspx?redir=members/home.aspx
Log in with your username and password. Under Manage Your Account, select "Change your username, password, etc." Choose the second state and/or second country you would like to belong to, type in the validation code at the bottom of the page and then click Update Profile. You will now be listed in both regions and receive news from both.

2. FEDEX Discount program: Barb McKie has been working hard to arrange shipping discounts for SAQA members. FedEx has a program for small businesses which we are being invited to join to receive discounts on shipping. From Barb: "To get FedEx discounts, the simplest route turned out to be to join an existing discount group: Make Mine a Million.org, otherwise also called Count Me In.org (CMI). This organization, which is primarily for entrepreneurial women to help them hone their business skills, get discounts for their activities, etc. does not discriminate by gender, so the men in our midst are free to sign up as well to take advantage of the opportunities involved.

There are two ways to sign up: Go to www.makemineamillion.org and sign in under Join Us Today. Then choose the FedEx discount offer and sign up there. OR Call 1-800-475-6708 and tell the FedEx representative that you wish to sign up for the CMI/Make-Mine-A-Million discount program. You may be asked for a "Promotion Code". If this happens, tell the operator that you don't have one and were told one was not needed, but that you are signing up for the CMI/Make-Mine-A-Million program.

NEW VIRTUAL EXHIBIT ON SAQA WEB SITE
This month’s guest curator is Gwen Magee, whose virtual exhibition is “Rhythm” http://www.saqa.com/galleries/mini_gallery.aspx?galid=40

Gwen wrote:
“Rhythm – a patterning of regular or irregular pulses, movement or variations." Whether the cadence is modulated or throbbing, reflective or disturbing, harmonious or discordant, quiet or vibrant, rhythm is one of the most powerful visual elements that an artist can use to create the tension that captures and holds the viewer’s attention.
Each of the artworks selected for this gallery reflects a studied and sophisticated use of one or more key rhythmic elements. Enjoy!

SAQA STORE NEWS
It has now been a year since SAQA started offering books for sale. This has increased awareness of these art quilt titles, helped the members who authored the books, and raised almost $2,000 for SAQA. A win-win situation all around.

Laura Wasilowski Fuse-and-Tell Journal QuiltsNEW BOOK: Fuse-and-Tell by Laura Wasilowski, C&T Publishing, 2008, ISBN 978-1-57120-502-5, $21.95, 64 pages, patterns.

Even if you’re a fusing fanatic already, this book is fun just for Laura Wasilowski’s outrageous journal stories that she created to go along with these fun small art quilts. If you’re not yet into fusing, clear step-by-step instructions are included for several projects to get you hooked. Helpful advice includes keeping a sketchbook of inspiration and ideas, creating your own patterned cloth with small fusible patterns before cutting out a major element for your pieces and the use of tweezers to position tiny pieces exactly where they need to be.

Jane Davila and Elin Waterston Teach You Art Quilting BasicsNEW DVD: Jane Dávila & Elin Waterston Teach You Art Quilting Basics, C&Y Publishing, 2008, ISBN 978-1-57120-620-6, $20.95.

Jane Dávila and Elin Waterston have taken the wonderful lessons from their “Art Quilt Workbook” and brought them to life. It was especially inspiring to watch Elin sketch an onion and garlic still life. Seeing an “expert” make mistakes, erase and try again gives viewers the courage to try sketching for themselves. The basics of color, design, working in series, making a fused collage and using found objects are all covered. Watching the DVD is like having a workshop in your own home, plus you can watch it on replay any time you wish. I also enjoyed getting a peek into Jane’s studio and seeing how she organizes all of her fabrics and supplies. Minor quibble – I wish that C&T would print up a titles sheet to include in the case, so that you can find the sections that you are interested in more quickly.

From Meg Cox:
Some of you already filled in a questionnaire for Meg Cox's next book, after she posted an item on the QuiltArt list in May. But for the rest, the author of The Quilter's Catalog is beginning to research the sequel and looking for all types of quilters to answer 10 questions. You'll find the survey on her website (http://www.megcox.com/meg_cox_2008_survey.htm). In her last book, Meg quoted numerous quilters who responded to her previous survey, and a few had their quilts featured in the book, including art quilter Jeri Riggs. If you have any questions about this, you can also ask Meg herself, meg@megcox.com.
